It's true what they say...

ben_washer_dryer.jpg

The sound of the washer and dryer really does save your life. Instant happiness! Now if I could only get a recording that didn't suck (more energy efficient, no?) Anyone know of a good one?

I use a fountain-- it works out well and I like that it's water, even if the fountain we have does sound a little like someone peeing. +)

He looks so much like Matt! Especially when he's got his imp face on...

My daughter loved the hair drier. I would have to hold it and I couldn't even walk away and reap the rewards of the silenced baby! It blew --hee hee that's a pun!

We bought a cd of the Pacific surf at night for $8 from Target. I still enjoy it!

When I was a wee one, I loved the whooshy sound from the snow on the TV when it was between channels or after station sign off. That was back when TV stations weren't 24 hours!

Ahhh, white noise!

Great photo!!!

We bought a white noise machine from Bed, Bath&Beyond for 20$. It has a "rain" setting that worked very well after my son Mati graduated from the vacuum cleaner, hehe.

andrea, i just got a new sound machine from sharper image and would you believe they have the sound of a washer/dryer on it?
it also has some weird stuff like the sound of hair dyer and horses trotting but yummy stuff too like bamboo chimes in the wind...

Ahhh, the ceiling fans in our cottage on Kauai.
Ohhh, the swing, battery operated only, no crankin momma here. And music, always soft or classical. No need for dryers in island life.
you find what works and know this too shall pass.
He is butt-on cute Andrea. Enjoy each moment and never blink.

What. a. cutie.

I'm voting for the sound machine, too. I have an older version of Homedics SoundSpa Sound Machine (local home store should have it) and love it. Lots. We live in a neighborhood still under construction and my boy can nap even when they are working. He's two and a half and still uses it every afternoon for a nap and all night long.

is it wrong that i want to bite him and then spank him 'til he cries? he is so cute, oh my goodness. he is stinking adorable...

i know that doesn't help with the washer sounds, but i thought i'd share :)

Yes so true, ours love to hear shower going too.

When I was a baby, my father made a recording of his heartbeat, amplifying the sound with some kind of coffee can set-up, and then looped the tape. This was back in the day of the reel-to-reel recorder. Apparently, all anyone had to do to make me fall asleep was to hit "play" on the machine under my crib. This would probably be easy to do now with something like Audacity and a microphone.

I would vacuum while my son was in his swing. He'd fall asleep within minutes! I also used the womb noise machine (found inside the Slumber Bear...sold at BRU). Now that he's older (16 months) we turn on a small fan in the spring/summer and a humidifier in the fall/winter. They are perfect noise makers to lull little ones to sleep!!

We use a SleepMate - it's a medically approved white noise machine - I love it and highly recommend it. You can find it on Amazon or ebay.

that's adorable. my parents used to have to drive me around to help me fall asleep. they said i was a very expensive baby.

OHMIGOD!!! He is too freakin' cute! Look at him blowing a raspberry at his mama! I think that may be a sign of many fun and funny times ahead for Mr. BHP and his folks :)

Growing up, we owned a laundrymat. What would happen if Ben heard about 60 washers/dryers at once? ;)

Posted by: CCC at January 30, 2007 05:39 AM

Yep, somebody already suggested it. Get yourself a sound machine. My 19 month old daughter still uses it. WONDERFUL!

The dishwasher worked wonders in the early weeks. Since we run the dishwasher more often than than washer/dryer, it just became part of our routine.

Also, we've always played Charlotte Diamond's "Slippery Fish" when it's time for bed so even now at eight-months, that woman's voice still has magical lulling properties.

Both of my kids go to sleep to sound machines! Best 25 bucks EVER spent.

I'd recommend the SleepMate, also. What's nice about it is that it never stops - no 'breaks' in the white noise (like there would be with a recording).

It really works. We got it to drown out street noise at a previous apartment, and it completely worked. Now we leave it on 24/7.

I think it's more than the sound, but also the vibration. My son loved the sound of rushing water, I would fill the tub several times a day while swaying him. We also found that he loved (and still does 8yrs later) the Linda Ronstadt Lullby CD. I actually had bought it by accident from one of those monthly CD clubs. I pulled it out during one of those sleepless nights and it did the trick. He still listens to it every night while falling asleep. Hopefully he can break this habit before he gets married.
Love all your photos!

I have an 11 month old daughter who also loved the sound of the dryer. We eventually downloaded a one hour white noise mp3 but found that many times it would restart as she was coming out of deep sleep and it would wake her up. We finally went to the local drug store and bought the only two clock radio white noise makers we could find we tried them both out and kept the cheaper one because the noise was more 'fuzzy' sounding and was louder. We put electrical tape over the display numbers so she wouldn't be distracted by them, not that you have to worry about that yet. It works great.

Ya know, they say all babies are cute and let's face it, that's just not true. But your baby is totally adorable and even at that really newborn stage where they're usually just wrinkly old men looking. I can't believe he is smiling and sticking his tongue out. Too cute! Makes me want to have another one!

My babies (now 19 and 15) both loved having a fan blowing on high in their rooms. They actually didn't give that up until they were both in preschool and my older one (at NYU now) still needs some kind of white noise to sleep.

I forgot the online shop I purchased a CD with white noise recordings for my son back when he was about Ben's age, but check this site out: http://www.purewhitenoise.com/whitenoisecd.html

They have several - Baby's Washing Machine, Baby's Dishwasher, Baby's Vacuum Cleaner, etc.

Good luck!

I would go for one of the machines. Either a white-noise machine or a humidifer. That way, you don't have to worry about the sound ending at the end of the CD. We tried a white-noise machine from Kohl's, but hated it. Now we use a humidifer (both in our room and our son's room).

We used to put our baby's swing to a spare bathroom - the sound of running water was doing the trick.

Posted by: Sergei at January 29, 2007 02:00 PM

Is he always smiling? What a little toadie he is.

Posted by: Leslie at January 29, 2007 01:47 PM

I've always slept with a humidifier. It not only makes breathing easier, but it makes a wonderful monotone white-noise sort of sound all night. I can never sleep without it!

Posted by: Sabine at January 29, 2007 01:47 PM

I have a 9 week old son who LOVES the white noise machine we bought online. It works better than a fan or washer...you can put it closer to their ears when sleeping. (on a low shelf, etc) I believe we got it (Sleep Mate) at thegoodsleepstore.com!
