The Valentine's Day Smilympics

smilympics.jpg
Matt and Andrea, Olympus Epic

The littlest superhero decided to sleep in one hour increments last night so I am running on empty today... but I wanted to offer up a little ode to my valentine husband Matt.

Above is a pic of Matt and I on our way to a costume party a few years ago. Sasha, Matt and I had a smilympics contest, a competitive event to see who can smile the biggest. (Isn't it true that getting ready for a party is always the best part?) Anyway, this photo is a perfect encapsulation of why I love my husband.

All I ever dreamed of was someone who would be silly with me and play at least a little bit every day. I got my wish! and especially these days, a funny dance or a made up rap goes a long way.

What did you/do you wish for in a Valentine?

This sounds so weird: I wanted to be with someone whose belly I could rub.

I recently got engaged to a terrific, terrific bloke named Adam Whitlock. I had two relationships before Adam. When I would be silly and try to rub their bellies, the first hated it and felt a bit self-concious, the other hated it and felt a bit self-concious, but would chase me and rub my belly back and be playful about it.

Adam is a tall lanky fellow. Sometime before we were dating, we were at a coffee shop and I decided to give his belly a little rub, see how he would react. And he just smiled, closed his eyes, and said "mmm!" and shook his shoulders in a funny little way. And as trivial as this sounds, it impressed me. This was a guy who didn't take himself too seriously. I still love that I rubbed his belly and he smiled.

Someone who sings silly songs to the cats and dog, watches ridiculous Saturday morning teen shows and gets just as involved as me, makes up goofy words and names for things and people, appreciates the outdoors and the environment, made a hysterical impromptu speech at our wedding (I still laugh five years later when I think about it), and states he "loves me the mostest" every day and is not afraid to say so to the florist for the card on Valentine's Day!

Great enormous smiles!

Sometimes, I wish my legal Valentine (my husband) was taller or a little more muscle-y or less adverse to being smooshy. But then we spend an evening together watching The Adventures of Pete & Pete or Buffy the Vampire Slayer and laugh our asses off together. Or he calls and sings "I luuuuuuuuvvvvvvvvv yoooooouuuuuu!" Or wears his stocking cap to bed to keep his ears warm. And my heart melts, and I know I got the guy for me.

What a great picture!

For twelve wonderful valentines I have gotten to celebrate with my friend, love, and now my husband. We got married on Feb 14 three years ago. He makes me laugh, loves me unconditionally, and is a wonderful Dad! I fall in love with him more as each year goes by!

Hope your little valentine lets you get some sleep tonight. Have you tried white noise? Our son likes a small fan in his room or radio static.

Great photo! Hope it's a Valentine-laced YEAR for all three of you... xoxo

Ok, all you girls who have gotten your Valentine wishes are giving me hope. I was just wondering today if I will ever find someone and trying to keep positive thoughts. Luckily I have a lot of good friends and bright colors (important to me too!) in my life.

I definately want someone who I can be silly with. Someone who is intelligent, kind, grounded, warm, capable (a problem solver), and creative. Basically, I want a best friend I love being and can count on.

I wished for a Valentine that would stay the course. When I am emotionally unstable and unsure of the relationship, he stays the course. His love is unwavering and strong. He makes my love more and more stable every day.

I wished for someone with a gentle spirit, who would treat me tenderly. Someone quiet who would look past the outer container and into the soul, who would see the real me and love that person. I have that in my husband. And though we have lived in separate states (me in Texas, him in Arizona) for two years of our three-year marriage, I love him more than ever. He is there because he can't find work here and I am here because my divorce decree mandates it until my youngest (now 14) graduates high school. We have both learned that distance is a matter of geography, not of the heart and that love does not recognize state lines!! We both long for the day that we can be together and end our quest for Southwest Airline rapid reward tickets. Even with these circumstances, I'd rather have him in my life than not and every time we see each other is like another honeymoon. He is the most gentle of souls and I am so lucky!

Hi Andrea!! I wanted my valentine to be silly and strong and NOTHING like any of the guys I grew up with. I found him - and he's nothing like anyone I grew up with - I'm Canadian and he's English!! Whoops! I should have been more specific geographically!!

P.S. About your post from a few days ago. My friend both swears by and swears AT a book called "Good Night, Sleep Tight: The Sleep Lady's guide to helping your child go to sleep, stay asleep, and wake up happy." She hates it because it went against her natural instincts about letting her child sleep but she also says that when she has her next baby she is going to start it sooner because now her little one is sleeping through the night! So I thought I'd tell you about it too - good luck!

Silliness and laughter are key ingredients in healthy, loving relationships I believe. I love your smilympic pic, such joy and happiness!

My Valentine is silly, smart, a rock for me, makes me laugh, makes me feel so loved and lucky. I wanted someone I could talk to, laugh with, be silly with, be there for each other, grow with...and I definitely found it!

All I wanted for my Valentine was someone worth celebrating. Rob is more worth celebrating than any person I've ever met. I love that man so much!

Also, I love the smilypic of you two. It is genius.

My Valentine told me recently that he was looking through some old journal entries and found one where he writes about a female friend asking where he got his tie and when he said "from a second-hand store" she looked at him like he was crazy to have shopped there. He wrote that he wants a woman who'll think that his second-hand tie was not only cool but a great find. He then smiled and hugged me and said "And here you are"...

Love this picture of you two!!

I completely agree about the silly. And you'll see now that you are parents this increases exponentially. As Joe often remarks to our kids' faces (one in middle school and one in high school) "We had you boys so that we would be constantly entertained!"
So true. There is always laughter in our house, particularly at dinner.

I live on Planet of the Guys over here, but I wouldn't have it any other way. They are all my Valentines.

I L-O-V-E this picture!!!! and I want you to get some sleep :(
I have everything I want in my valentine... silly, kind, smart, articulate, passionate and driven without being too crazy about it, and most importantly, not afraid to call me on my sh*t. Can any of us ask for more?

Hooray for silly!

Someone who doesn't want me to leave without another kiss and hug, whose face lights up when I walk in the room, who holds my hand as he reads, who praises my cooking and asks for seconds, and cuddles up, hogging the pillow when we go to sleep.

I have all that and more with my 11 year old daughter and 6 year old son.

That is a great photo.

For valentine's day, I like someone who doesn't buy into the commercial end if it!

Thankfully, I have that.

My super valentine didn't buy me one dozen red roses.

Instead he cooked me dinner and filled holes that I had made in a wall with the drill! That was a great valentine's day present.

Incidentally, St. Valentine is buried here in Dublin, Ireland! :-)

i am one of the blessed, my valentine has been around for 12 years now and never been sweeter. i cherish his friendship and that particular freedom that comes with him knowing me so well. during the challenges (like now) and the joy that is always nearby, he is a rock, a wonder, my love. accolades to him for all he is to me. kisses, tim, i love you.

p.s. smilyimpics rock...they made me smile too. get some shut eye if you can.

I've gotten my wish too. As a matter of fact, this is the first Valentine's Day that I have had a boyfriend. Added to that is that he is all that I wished for, goofy, funny, intelligent, caring, talented, artistic, has the warmest brown eyes on earth, etc. etc. I could go on forever. We're saying to hell with the snow and are getting together today anyway. Love to you and everyone who reads your blog!

My dream was to find someone who speaks my language in $5 words, actions, catch phrases and song lyrics. I got my wish and together we'll out-code the world.

Posted by: Amanda Block at February 14, 2007 12:22 PM

Someone who calls me every hour to say he loves me on V-Day and apologizes that he can't come over because of the (ho ho ho) snow! Snow on Valentines Day sux!

Posted by: CCC at February 14, 2007 11:02 AM

That was my wish too! It came true and I am so lucky to have him and all our silliness together! Happy Valentine's day, Andrea!
