not enough sun and yet

not enough sun and yet

The tomatoes are in it for the long haul.

Planted too soon in a hollow echo of cold shade,
they've stayed silent for weeks, peeking
shyly from the soil on the warmer afternoons,
watching for the first insinuation of early summer
to hit the northeastern corner of the back deck.

Now, mid-May, there's still not enough sun and yet
I can see it advancing—slowly, precisely—and I'm thinking how
even tomatoes have to wait for the right moment to rise up
and show themselves.

Those look amazing! In the train station at Davis Square in Somerville, Massachusetts, there are poems in the brick floor. I always liked this one called "No Free Will in Tomatoes" by Peter Payack:

I place a tomato
on the windowsill
to ripen.

Slowly it turns red.

I like to think that fruit achieves some sort of satisfaction out of ripening, even if it has no choice in the matter.

There was a recent entry on the blog Wide Lawns and Narrow Minds (http://www.widelawns.blogspot.com/) about the author's birthing story, and I thought you might like it. May 16th.

I want to bury my head in that pile of tomatoes. This is the fourth time I've looked at this photo and it's all I can think about.

Wow. Thanks so much for this! Those last two lines are precisely what I needed to hear today.... Your blog has been a source of such inspiration for me (I've been a lurker, I must confess) from your posts on creativity to your struggle to conceive to your balancing of art and motherhood.

mmm...yummy pic.

i just watched something on the green channel of sundance about how we should eat tomatoes only when they're in season and that is when they are best.

the way they described a perfectly ready tomato was divine...and then i see this picture.

craving.
