Valentine's Day treats

Valentine's Day is right around the corner. I know this only because I have a jewelry business and it is my job to know these things and get the ladies their treats on time. Otherwise, these days it's hard to remember much of anything.

I always feel a little funny recommending my own work for gifts, but I'll just say it loud and proud: if you have always wanted a superhero necklace (or more juicy colors to add to your collection) I encourage you to gift yourself this Valentine's Day or send your sweetie my way!

I am also a fan of handmade gifts of love and sweet romantic gestures that are not about dollars spent.

Some ideas:
Shutterfly book filled with photos that make you smile.
Small Kolo book with tiny notes written inside.
Wooden letters that spell out I LOVE YOU or YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL...
Magic rocks with custom messages on them from the totally magical Dancing Mermaid.

Perhaps you can add some of your favorite creative gifts to this list? What is the most romantic gift you have ever given or received? If you do not have a valentine this year, what kind thing can you do for yourself or a dear friend?

The totally magical dancing mermaid rocks? Rock. What a great idea.

Honestly, I can't think of a 'romantic' gift that I cherish, but my favorite valentine's gift is a handmade piece of art from my little guy when he was three. It has cut out hearts, drawn hearts, glitter hearts... it's the best. :)

My husband isn't big on holidays in general - at least not from the perspective of giving gifts associated with them. He shows his love by spending time with me. Though two years ago he did something extremely sweet, and he got our daughter (who was 2 1/2 at that time) to make a valentine for me. He made a book-like card, and asked her questions (which he wrote down, both question and answer, in the book). Things like, "what do you like best about Mommy?" and "What do you like to do with Mommy?" and "What is your favorite food Mommy makes?" and so on. At the end he wrote out what he thinks is special about me too, and it was very touching. Best Valentine gift I ever got. Of course it was maybe the second or third one I have ever gotten in 15 years - the first were chocolate dipped pretzels (I do not like pretzels) and one year I got some pretty wildflowers. This one took the cake.

my husband is not big on valentine's day but he knows i am. when we were dating he made me a model airplane pulling a banner that said " I love Chrissy" and hung it in my room from the ceiling so that i would see it when I wake up and go to sleep. Just lovely!

My husband is not big on V-day but about 3 years ago he gave me a red journal that had a heart made out of a bone looking material (not cheesy) on it. He knows I love to journal. He wrote inside that it was my love journal to record all the special things we do together. It's filled with the love we share, the fun times, the secret moments. Radiating positive things. This is my favorite gift by far.

When my husband and I were dating (before we lived together and shared the same car), Rob would drive 40 minutes from his house every night to clean off my car during the winter, so that when I left work, I wouldn't have to worry about it. He would not only clean off my car, but he would leave a note written in snow on one of the windows, usually a different note every night. It was like magic. :-)

After we got married, he also would write me "Love Letters" (normally just notes about silly stuff, and cute drawings of cats wearing helmets), and would mail them from his work, because I loved getting mail. I've saved every one of those letters, and everything he's ever given me, and since we just found out we're having a little boy, I can only hope that we raise him to be just as wonderful as his Dad. :-D

I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day or even of huge romantic gestures (I don't know why but I find them a bit cringey). But I'll never forget when my first love (a dedicated and manly meat eater) decided, without any prompting from me to become vegetarian because it was something that was important to me. We're not together anymore but it really was the most romantic experience of my life and still makes me happy just thinking about it. Haha - I guess romance comes in all different shapes and forms.....

Being single I make a dinner reservation at one of my favorite restaurants. Leave work early come home and take a long hot bath , doing a facial doll myself all up, take my book and journal and I take myself out to dinner after all I am my valentine. What better day than this to remember to love myself. I have done this for the last three years or so.

My favorite gift I ever received came last year. My husband cooked a traditional galobki dinner that is my absolute favorite, but I usually only get to have it once a year when my mom makes it. He looked up the recipe in our family cookbook and did a great job with it. And for dessert he made chocolate covered strawberries. oh! And he had some nice mixed flowers on the table. Of course I was pregnant at the time, so maybe that's why I enjoyed the totally edible gifts!

Most romantic gift has to be a book of Chopin waltzes, piano music, that I really wanted back in the day. It was the first non-stuffed-animal, chocolate, typical Valentine's Day gift. Made me feel really loved and talented.

when i was younger and in college, i had the inhabitants of my entire floor each put a big red letter in their windows, spelling out "i love you Joe" (my boyfriend at the time) - and walked him nonchalantly by and then said gee, what is that up there?

I just made a photo book on Monday for my boyfriend. It's not too Valentine's-Day-themey but it is about love. To personalize it even more, I added quotes from his favorite bands and movies (all related to love, romance, etc.). I hope it comes in on time!

i used to work at a university, and the student a cappella groups could be hired to serenade someone. at the appointed time of day the entire group (ten or fifteen guys) would swoop into the appointed classroom, meeting, or office and sing a love song to the recipient, presenting them with a rose and generally making them swoon with so much attention. two different years i did this for two different single friends, and they are some of my best valentine memories!
