Deb Talan and The Weepies

Deb Talan is one of my dearest friends. Since I was a fan of her music before we met, there is still a part of me that gets all goobery and starry eyed by her talent, her beauty and her deep creativity. If you haven't heard Deb's music or The Weepies yet you are in for a treat.

We met in a serendipitous way, which is how all of the best things in my life unfold. Years ago, Matt and I were searching for a summer subletter and a friend pointed us to a wonderful musician who needed a place to live for several months. One day he heard me playing the Weepies and ran into my room excitedly, "You're a fan of the Weepies?" When I told him how much I loved them, he smiled and said that he was a friend of theirs and often plays with them. We hatched a plan for them to do a house concert at our place a few months later.

It was like a dream come true. I remember a moment so vividly when I was stirring a big pot of pasta on the stove and Deb and Steve were doing soundcheck in the living room. I grinned so wide, taking in the music and thought, My favorite band in the whole world is playing in my living room right now. How did I get so lucky? My heart was so full.

And really, you guys know this because you are Weepies fans. Even when they are playing on your stereo in your living room, you get that full-hearted warm feeling, right? They just do that to you.

Their new album was just released, Hideaway, and I think it's the best one yet. A friend of mine put it well when she said, How did they know they were making an entire album just for me?

I'd read everyone raving about the Weepies on blogs (like yours, of course) for years and yet what tipped me to finally buy their new CD? The big whale on the cover. And I love it, love it, LOVE IT. I can't believe I waited so long to experience their goodness.

Oh, I love this new "album" already. Just downloaded it from Amazon--2 bucks cheaper than from iTunes!
Thanks.

I will be eternally grateful for discovering The Weepies through your website. I dance every night with my 10 month old daughter to the music as part of our bedtime routine.

Hi Andrea-

I went out and bought the album this weekend. It is one of those things where you love them so much you can only listen one song at a time to soak it in. Like, they ACTUALLY keep turning such great music out. And I too thought, they wrote this album for *me*.

I hope they never stop writing.

Oh, I love house concerts and I know just what you're saying ... about grinning from ear to ear as the music and the soul of it all fills your home and your heart. What a great picture! I had no idea what Deb looked like. Will check out the new album.

The best things in my life happen serendipitously too.

Hmm... maybe this music tip is one of them? I'm going to check them out.

Wow! What a wonderful story. It really is a small world after all.

I actually heard the Weepies on NPR (i think) but have yet to purchase any tunes. Can you recommend a few songs I could get off iTunes for a newbie? You can email me.

Thanks.

FYI - This is a comment totally unrelated to this post.

Each month in the "O" Magazine (Oprah's magazine) they have someone share books that have meant something to them.

I thought you might want to know that the May 2008 article, "Miranda July's Bookshelf", mentions a book by your friend - Michael Bernard Loggins.

It is on page 242 of the issue.

Just thought you might want to check it out in case you hadn't heard about it yet.

Congrats to him for getting his name in print and his work recognized.

i love the weepies...i was lucky to see them in a tiny venue when they released the first album...but i have to say i was a deb fan before i was a weepie fan!

You inspired me, a while back, to check out the Weepies...and I am grateful! At the moment, the song that resonates for me the most is still "Citywide Rodeo." But I am definitely enjoying the new album!

That's EXACTLY how i feel about the album too :-) Their music has carried me through so many dark places, it's been a true gift. tell Deb we love her x

I first heard of The Weepies through your blog I think. I've been in love with their music ever since.

Hideaway has been playing over and over in my cd player. It is beautiful!

I fell in love with The Weepies last year and they were the soundtrack to a really rough part of my college experience. I think it is due in large part to their music that I can look back on those months and smile.

I too have a musician friend that could be described exactly as you described Deb; we hung out all weekend when he was playing local shows and the whole time I was a tiny bit in awe that we were actually friends.

The photo is beautiful, as was the writing. Thanks!

I don't own any of their music, shame on me I know, but I have heard them and they are great.
What a great story and friendship that has evolved.

Oh, yes, I adore the Weepies. Their music fills my heart and my house and my car and my mp3 player.

Their music has been background to packing and moving (then they serendipitously played at the local community theater 2 weeks after we moved in), thinking about being newly pregnant while driving to work, being in labor with my daughter, driving to myriad doctors' appointments as we sift through our baby's health issues, celebrating and enjoying and cooking and playing with a full heart - so well put, Andrea.

Texture gives this image a nice added interest. I like it.

The Weepies are awesome. I heard of them through you. I missed the new album in the midst of my new mom life! :) I'll have to add it to the todo list.
