I don't believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive. -Joseph Campbell

I simply love this quote. So many people are searching right now. Searching for some meaning, some existence.

Right now, for me, is being a mother. It's what gets me out of bed in the morning. Keeps my crazy thoughts quiet. Puts a smile on my face when I am depressed and blue.

Walking around for hours with a camera strapped around my neck, sharing a meal and drinks with friends, music, nature, rain, sun, stars, moon. Your blog.

Hello Andrea, I've been reading your blog for a while now and love it.

Your son is so precious. I adore these photos.

That Joseph Campbell quote is one of my fav's. What make's me feel alive? Spending time in nature, always. Being spontaneous, enjoying the outdoors, picnics with the people close to me. Singing, creating art, watching my daughter's curious eyes and watching her play and smile and dance and be happy, dancing... all these things and more.

:)

Oh my lordy you have the most beautiful, sweetest son! As for what makes me feel alive, MANY things, but tonight I have chocolate on the brain so I want to say that my response tonigh is that chocolate very, very much makes me feel alive but it also makes me very, very fat very, very quickly! ) : And I just lost 60 pounds not long ago and am in no rush to go back. So I will just have to settle for being a little "less alive" tonight!

Doing an interview.
Working hard with a crew when everything's going smoothly.
Laughing and laughing with my baby.
Being caught by surprise in a big laugh.
Witnessing death.

Lying in bed with my daughters while they sleep, listening to their breathing, watching their facial expressions. It can be especially delightful when I hear my youngest giggle in her sleep.

The sun on my face after a few overcast days.

Wearing summer clothing and flip flops.

painting (brush to paper, brush to canvas) or drawing (meditation via pencil)
laughing until my stomach hurts and I have to wipe my eyes
walking along the edge of the ocean
working in the garden
reading to a little one, curled up in my lap
exercise, when I'm out in the world (hiking, etc. but not in a gym...)
listening to live music, or live readings of poetry or prose
trying something new (travel, especially!)
when I'm in the groove with my work, knowing I'm making a difference in my team
deep conversation, connecting from the heart

wow. ben looks great :-)

what makes me feel alive:
sitting outside, watching a thunderstorm come in, and then the rain.

wind

huge clouds. i have become a girl with her head in the clouds - so much that i'm pretty sure i'm bound to run into to something soon because i'm not paying attention to what's in front of me! i love it that i have become this though. always so practical, always so worried, and now ALIVE and taking chances. i am always looking up for cloud hearts. i swear if i ask for one, a heart will appear. this makes me feel like a little kid.

nature. the older i get the more i go back to nature. i have slowed way way down and noticed more of it lately. this too reminds me of childhood. i think children remind us of the things, the goodness, we know but forget we know. i've been feeling like i'm remembering so much when i take long walks outside and just pay more attention. maybe it's something that happens when you turn 35?

children

anything that makes me feel a sense of magic

smell: roses, the way my little boy smells a little like a puppy who needs a bath after a day of playing outside, the way the women in my family smell like the ocean, like air and water and sun, the smell of rain, freshly cut grass

being creative - making stuff

day dreams, big dreaming

Posted by: Jennifer at June 18, 2008 06:42 AM

Loving and being loved...the smell of the ocean carried on a breeze...laughing really hard...my beautiful friends...
P.S. Andrea, what happened to your baby??? When did he turn into such a little man? Amazing how fast he has grown!

Posted by: Piper at June 18, 2008 05:57 AM

being true to myself - and the process of figuring out what that means for me - is what makes me feel alive. what about you?

Posted by: emily at June 18, 2008 05:38 AM

My three kids (Gina 17, Bennett 4 and Brooke 4 months) laughing together, and seeing how much they all love each other. I never knew joy of this magnitude existed...it is overwhelming.

Thank you for this question...it was a blessing today in particular.

Right now: the breeze on my neck, the snuffling sounds of my dogs getting ready for bed, my husband waiting to hold me upstairs, the feel of a good book between my fingers, when words come to me and make sense.

a good wild wind .. being hit by a nice big wave coming in at the beach .. dancing .. having a very truthful conversation .. (a few that come to mind)

Doing a backbend
Smelling my neighbors' roses

Posted by: celisa at June 17, 2008 06:15 PM

you can see it in ben...he is going to be something amazing...his eyes, his face, his whole stature say so...

what makes me feel alive: playing any instrument..or even learning to, esp the banjo...swimming in a cold river... dancing and jumping up and down...reading your and jen's entries....singing really loud driving down the road with my windows rolled down and sunroof wide open...swimming underwater...laying back on the ground looking at the stars...this list goes on and on...

Singing;
the cold water of Lake Michigan and wet sand between my toes;
Laughing;
Sex;
Reaching out and having someone grab my hand.
