Superpowers

andrea_catie_curtis.jpg

I have a few superpowers. One worth noting is that I am able to fall asleep within seconds of my head hitting the pillow. Another is that I will inevitably pick the longest, slowest line at the supermarket. (Okay, so that's sort of an anti-superpower)

But one of my favorite superpowers is that I have a knack for meeting (and often befriending) some of the most talented singer/songwriters around... The Weepies, Jonatha Brooke, Ben Harper, Martine Locke. You might remember a few weeks ago, I met a very charming man at the taqueria and he told me about his daughter Rachel Garlin.

Well now I'm a new fan! and she invited me to a show she was doing with Catie Curtis this weekend in Berkeley. I didn't know Catie Curtis' music until now and I can't believe I was in the dark for so long. She is amazing. You can give a listen on her myspace page and also see her list of upcoming shows.

Also, Jonatha is currently touring and I wish I could follow her around the country and go to each and every show. I will definitely be at her gig at Slim's in San Francisco on my birthday, November 9th.

What are your superpowers? Are you able to tell something is wrong with a friend simply by the way they answer the phone? Are you the calm in the storm? Tell me about your superpowers...

I can always figure out how to fit all of our storage containers and lids back into the drawer ... hey, not exactly magic, but very important in a small kitchen. Thanks for the links to new music (to me).

hmmm.. i think picking the long line is superpower! How empowering if you choose to stay there, chill and read a magazine. :) It's what I do.

my other powers include: decorating with reclaimed items, patience and compassion...

wow, i didn't think that would be so hard to say about myself.

Everyone's parking stories reminded me of my own. We have a parking-goddess prayer that we always say: "Oh, Parking Goddess, Help me find a safe, legal, big enough parking space, within a minute of starting to look and within a block of my destination." When we were trying (and trying) to get pregnant, we finally started praying . . . to the parking goddess. And it worked! "Oh Parking Goddess, help us conceive a safe, legal, big enough healthy baby on this try and with good sex connected." (The sex part because my higher power told me that the reason sex can be useful in conceiving, even if it's not directly responsible, is that its primary purpose in the whole thing is to connect people in love--a good context for making a baby, however you are making it. I hope this makes some kind of sense.) In any case, the Parking Goddess seems to be in charge of a lot more than just opening a space up in the world when you need a place to stop.

Oh you're SO lucky!! I've been a fan of Catie Curtis for a long time now. She's one of the best singer/songwriters in the world, in my humble opinion. I've seen her perform live, but never got to meet her.

My dear friend and housemate Gemma thinks I have a superpower. I can glance at her from outside the room and know if she needs a hug.

Posted by: Marianne at October 16, 2008 11:22 PM

My superpowers are unnerving to a lot of people. I ask the questions no one wants to risk asking, point out the elephants in the room, and take the hits that those who kept their mouths shut did not want to take. It's both a blessing and a curse.

Posted by: W. Lotus at October 16, 2008 09:55 PM

I also can fall asleep within 30 seconds of my head hitting the pillow (I hear this will change in menopause so enjoy it now). Other superhero-ness about me is my ability to stay calm in crisis, and my perpetual instict to insert my foot in my mouth especially when I promise myself that I won't. I never disappoint myself...I always speak the truth, darn it!

I came across your site after I linked up from ShutterSisters as I aspire to get my first SLR this winter. I am so glad I found you!

I am a CC fan and was lucky enough to be an undergrad in Boston in the 90's when Catie was playing in some small intimate venues. Also a Jonatha fan. I envy your singer/songwriter superhero power. To attract soulful women...

Happy to have found your blog.

My superpower is that I befriend people everywhere I go because I can make conversation with just about anyone. Granted, it's because I also tend to eavesdrop or just overhear what's going on around me and pipe in, but it almost always makes me a temporary buddy while waiting in the inevitable longest line at the supermarket or, in one instance, the time I met the producer of the Sixth Sense while waiting in line for the ferry at Ellis Island - all because I overheard his kid asking how to get from one place in NYC to the other and I happened to know the answer. My assistant calls it my bionic hearing ability.

I love love love Catie Curtis. I've been enjoying her for several years now. She tends to pop into my head out of nowhere. If you like her, I'd HIGHLY suggest Lucy Kaplansky. Ten Year Night is one of my favorite songs of all time. And, even though their sound is very different, if you've never heard The Nields, I'd check them out too!

Woh! I've been missing posts. The feed apparently isn't working.

Hmm...superpowers? I'm going to have to think about that. But if I could choose one? I'd fly.

Posted by: Wanda at October 16, 2008 05:47 PM

love the post... i also have this superpower for befriending amazing musicians. it's the willingness to dig, i bet. to dig and then create.

other superpowers? bending the rules to work more reasonably in my life. not forcing myself to do what others expect, but rather really listen to find what i'd like to expect for myself- and then... try to do it!

been reading your blog a bit lately... seems like you have many more superpowers that we're constantly given little glimpses into. thanks for living out loud.

Posted by: rachael at October 16, 2008 01:27 PM

Whenever a friend comes to me an cries, I listen, I comfort and then I am overwhelmed by the power to make them laugh. It always, *always* works. :)

i just wanted to add that you look absolutely fabulous in that picture....the jacket really suits you too (i want it)!!

Posted by: celisa at October 16, 2008 11:33 AM

Lucky girl! Thanks for the reminder to add "Long Night Moon" back into my cd rotation. It is almost two years to the day that I saw Catie Curtis and Mark Erelli perform at the Somerville Theater. What a gift that was.
I have seen her perform a least four times, and from start to finish, I just smile the whole night through.

I think another of your superpowers is to be friends with some of the most naturally beautiful people. I still think about the post where you mentioned your skin care regime (nada)--infuriating for those of us not similarly blessed. Everyone in your photos, including you, is simply gorgeous.

Posted by: Melissa at October 16, 2008 09:13 AM

my parking prayer:
"Mary Baker Eddy She's so Fine, she turned water in to WINE." then I clap three times and the space appears.
my anti-super power: I crash computers, wherever I go, they go haywire, freeze up, shut down, misbehave. Maybe I got struck by lightning and the zaps are still coming out.
i LOVE Catie Curtis. Wish I could have come hung out with you all.
xoxoxo

i'm so glad you posted this!! i forget i need to send you that cd of christabel and the jons!! i'm gonna see them soon, they are playing near atlanta in a couple of weeks fun fun!!

i think my superpower is resilence...after a set back, i am able to shift things around in my brain quite quickly and easily and make a positive spin out of anything. it is a blessing that i took for granted in my younger years.

Posted by: celisa at October 16, 2008 07:18 AM

What a surprise to see Catie Curtis mentioned on your blog! Her parents, sister, and nieces attend my church, and my dad has been a fan for years. He listens to classical music on the way to work, but when his car had a cassette tape player, and Catie had cassette tapes for sale, he had his in the car to listen to on the way to work.

My superpower is to always be happy. It's hard at times but most of the time I can do it!

Posted by: Erika at October 16, 2008 07:15 AM

her music is amazing.. lucky you!

Posted by: susan at October 16, 2008 06:27 AM

I found Catie when she opened for Jonatha in Minneapolis a long time ago. I love them both - well, their music. I don't know either of them personally. Lucky you!

Posted by: Auntly H at October 15, 2008 09:36 PM

I too get in the longest line. Always.

If I am really on my secret powers, I can make the dice roll where I need them to go. I can tell what people are thinking... not words, feelings.and sometimes I get flashes of the future... I think.

It's hard work, and I am not often "on." They don't talk about how hard it is to be a superhero, sometimes.

Posted by: rowena at October 15, 2008 09:29 PM

That's definitely a pretty cool super power to have! :) I'm so glad you fout Catie Curtis--I've loved her for ages! She's fantastic! Jealous that you got to hang with her.

i had to laugh at richie's comment because my superhero power is also what i call "Doris Day parking".

xo

Posted by: stacy at October 15, 2008 06:41 PM

my superpower would be that i can always find something positive or cheer someone up when they are down... funny cause i can do this so easily for others, but sometimes have a hard time doing this for myself.

my other superpower would also be that i can fall asleep in seconds after putting my head on my pillow... very handy for a tired momma!

Posted by: jennlui at October 15, 2008 05:48 PM

I too, have a parking spot superpower and although I am not religious, I have what I call the "parking prayer." It goes like this: "Holy Mary, full of grace.....please find me a parking space." It seriously works 9 out of 10 times and my husband thinks I'm a nutcase for it, but he doesn't complain when I find a close spot. LOL!!

I love, love, love Jonatha Brooke which is how I found your blog and fell in love with your necklaces and my husband bought me one for Christmas last year. Years ago, I had the distinct pleasure of seeing a Jonatha Brooke concert here in Michigan where Catie Curtis opened for her...what a dream!!! It was quite a long time ago, but I am so happy that I bought a Catie Curtis cd...I listen to it almost as much as I listen to Jonatha.

Cheers to Superpowers and Super Women everywhere!

My mom and I have the most excellent superpower (are they inherited?): we can go into a completely empty shop, restaurant, or gallery and within minutes the place becomes crowded.

Are we magnetic? Do we just have good timing? Should we open our own restaurant? It's really very silly, but enjoyable.

Posted by: mollie at October 15, 2008 04:56 PM

I can wish parking spaces in very tight, seemingly impossible places. My friend and I call it "Doris -the parking fairy" as in Doris Day who could pull up to any place and find a spot right up in front.

It works for others too.
A. you have to ask out loud for Doris to help as in... "Doris I need a parking spot on this block please"
B. you have to believe
;)

My superpower is wonderful and I'm lucky to have it! I have a knack for making grumpy coworkers become happy coworkers. So much so that I often have no idea that the person was a grump, I only knew them as happy. Isn't that delightful! :-)

Posted by: T at October 15, 2008 04:14 PM

i'm so glad you found catie curtis. i've loved her music for a while now but have yet to see her live!

my superpower? i get to meet and work with some famous women, but in a way that has us meeting as two simple humans. sorry...can't say who. i also have the superpower of befriending musicians (canadian ones). it helps to go to lots of folk music concerts, to not put them too far up on a pedestal and to remember that they are just messy lovely humans such as ourselves!

Posted by: vivienne at October 15, 2008 02:14 PM

I make the world's best mixtape for pretty much any situation. I used to say I made the best depressing mixtape, but I've moved out of that territory and now most of my mixes are happy ones.

How do you manage to collect rockstar friends? You must share your secret!

I have a great memory of laying in my tent in the early morning at a music festival years ago and hearing The Story (Jonatha's old duo, for the uninitiated) practicing "In the Gloaming" in the distance. Would love to hear her live again!

You look so cute in that jacket!!! Miss ya x

Posted by: Gypsy Alex at October 15, 2008 01:16 PM

My superpower? I drain batteries. No really. Recently my ipod died. Like totally dead. And then the the fully charged batteries in my camera would only like 3 pictures before dying. And my laptop, that used to go for 2 1/2 hours on a full battery now dies on me at like 20 minutes. I'm trying to learn how to channel that power that I apparently suck out of batteries into something productive, like washing dishes at super fast speeds.

I also have the uncanny ability when hanging up clothes from the dryer to pull out the exact number of hangers I need. I never count the clothe items or the hangers, but I always have the exact right amount!

Posted by: Nicole at October 15, 2008 01:05 PM

One of my superpowers is that I can scrounge up weird ingredients in my kitchen and actually make something decent to eat.

Another is the that I have a knack for picking the perfect book for others to read. I don't know HOW I know which book they will like, I just do.

Thanks for the music recommendations!

I attract friends who turn me on to the best music. ever. Thank you.

oh yea - I can also travel with three suitcases and still wear the same thing everyday of my trip.

Sweet, Sweet Andrea,

I'm popping out to see Jonatha on Saturday at the Paradise in Boston. I'm flirting with holding up a Squam Sassy Hot Mama sign and see if she remembers me lol...thanks for the introduction to all this beautiful music...Jonatha plays loudly in my car now and I own the Weepies and I'm adding Rachel and Catie to my Cache as well....

Much love to you,
